On 24. July, 1980, Eric Carr (real name Paul Caravello) officially signed his first contract with Kiss, securing his place as Peter Criss’ permanent replacement, who officially left Kiss 18. May, 1980. The agreement was finalized just one day before Carr made his live debut with the band at the Palladium in New York City.

The contract, dated 24. July, 1980, was a five-year employment agreement between Carr and the Kiss partnership. Under its terms, Carr received an annual salary of $100,000, while Kiss covered his touring, travel, costume and stage expenses. Like later replacement members, however, Carr joined the band as an employee rather than an equal partner, meaning he did not share in the band’s ownership or business decisions.
The agreement also assigned ownership of Carr’s Kiss character and any related intellectual property to the band, including his now-iconic Fox persona. While Carr retained songwriter royalties for material he helped write, publishing rights created during his employment belonged to Kiss under the terms of the contract. Carr’s fox makeup design was filed for trademark registration 10. July, 1981.
Carr had received the draft contract on 22. July, 1980, the same day Kiss publicly announced him as the band’s new drummer. After reviewing the paperwork, he signed it two days later, on the eve of his first performance with the group. The following night, 25.
