On 3. July, 1976, Kiss took the stage in their “Destroyer” costumes for the very first time as they opened the Destroyer/Spirit of ’76 Tour with a sold-out performance at the Civic Center in Springfield.

Replacing the costumes worn throughout the “Alive!” era, the new outfits were designed by Larry LeGaspi, the New York-based fashion designer best known for his futuristic glam and disco creations. LeGaspi worked closely with the band to create a more theatrical and larger-than-life image that matched the visual direction of “Destroyer”. The costumes were constructed by LeGaspi and his team using metallic lamé, leather, sequins, studs, mirrors, and custom-made armor pieces. The complete set reportedly cost approximately $40,000 to produce, which was an enormous investment for a touring rock band in 1976.

The redesigned outfits featured brighter colors, more intricate detailing, and larger shoulder pieces than their predecessors, instantly becoming some of the most recognizable stage costumes in rock history.
