According to official Aucoin Management paperwork, the interview with Ian “Molly” Meldrum began at 8:30 p.m. at the Brooklyn Heights Promenade before moving to the rooftop of World Trade Center Tower 1, where filming concluded around 11:00 p.m.
The interview quickly became famous for all the wrong reasons. Meldrum repeatedly stumbled over his questions, mixed up details about the band, and struggled through several takes while the members of Kiss cracked jokes. The resulting outtakes have since become one of the most widely circulated and best-loved moments in the history of Australian music television.
Although filmed in early August, the segment was held back until September as part of ABC’s extensive promotion of the upcoming Australian tour. The full program aired on 14. September, 1980, with Kiss serving as guest hosts. In addition to the interview, the episode featured concert footage from the opening night of the Australian tour in Perth, including performances of “Is That You” and “Talk To Me.”
